Bolla Galeotta

Sparkling Rosé Syrah Tuscany IGT Ancestral Method

As I've noted on the back label, drawing liberally from Dante: Galeotta fu la bolla, or as one might say in English: “Blame it on the bubbly!”

After shaking my head at my wife's suggestion of making a “sparkling” version of our Syrah for several years, I finally gave in… and I'm glad I did.

Bolla Galeotta

We experimented with many different ways of vinifying our Syrah grapes, at first using a méthode classique, and I have to say that those darn bubbles ended up seducing me, too.

Our last experiment, relying on the méthode ancestrale for vinification, proved to be the most successful one. With it, we've obtained a delightful and amusing bubbly Syrah, what the French would call a Pét Nat, or pétillant naturel, a naturally sparkling wine.

To make it, we harvest the grapes early, earlier even than for our rosé wine, Rosa del Castagno. We carefully select a batch and vinify it as a white, going through all the phases of crushing, destemming, and soft pressing. After carefully monitoring the fermentation and verifying that the residual sugars in the must match that of our previous trials - which assures us that there will be the right amount of carbon dioxide and bubbles after the transformation of sugars into alcohol - we bottle the wine. Its indigenous yeasts remain at the base of the bottle: in fact, this kind of wine is said to have “a bottom” or, as our cousins over the Alps say, “sur lie.” These yeasts signify that the fermentation continues and concludes within the bottle, creating those much-desired bubbles.

Guida ai Grandi Vini d’Italia

I was honestly surprised by the pleasant flavors expressed by this sparkling (in every sense of the word!) version of our Syrah. While we definitely aren't going to make any Champagne producers lose their precious sleep, we can offer people the chance to savor an unusual expression of the cultivar.

With its friendly, lively, tiny bubbles, it is a wine that is both sincere and natural, easy to drink, perfect for social occasions, cheerful and friendly, and never dull or artificial.  It's my hope that this wine and its bubbles will bewitch and seduce you, just like Dante's young lovers, Paolo and Francesca, were seduced, albeit by a book!

Wine Ratings

91/100

A lightly hazy, deep-pink sparkling with aromas of apples, pink guava, sourdough and citrus zest. It’s medium-bodied with soft bubbles and bright acidity. Textured and fresh.

A mix of wild strawberry, dusty rose and crushed rocks rises from the 2020 Toscana Rosato Bolla Galeotta. It’s soft-textured and savory, with soothing bubbles and saline-mineral tones that keep the tension high, and finishes a bit tropical, to hints of green melon and young mango.
